tsaka hindi ba pangit na STAND-UP Chair ka tapos ikaw magcoconvene ng LCC? hindi ba may conflict of interest yun kahit sabihin mo pang genuine ang desire mo for service? ikaw magcoconvene ng local councils pero umaalingasaw ang pagka-bias dahil pangulo ka ng isang partido… how unfair… :(

Ikaw Concerned CommRes student?

Her being impartial is of utmost importance.

Airah… i hope you know what you’re doing… conflicts of interests are not good… Definitely not good especially when your job description requires you to do otherwise.

Kelan pa naging impartial ang vice chair, or any member of the USC for that matter? The USC is not a judicial body or a tribunal to arbitrate affairs of students. It is foremost an advocate of students rights and welfare. That alone will disqualify it from impartiality.

    to sjsanjuan:

An officer’s loyalty and partisanship with his/her party should end when your service to the University studentry begins. How can a Stand-Up Chairperson go against her own party? Hindi po ba conflict of interest?

Ang tanong ko lang po naman is kungyari may issue na may two sides. What if her party’s stand isn’t really what the studentry want or is detrimental to the student’s welfare? (this is just an if lang naman)… Will she vote for her party or for what majority of the students want?

These are just thoughts that entered my mind with what Concerned Commres student said. Good day to you!

    @ para sa bayan:

From your way of reasoning, then I guess everybody in the council should resign from their respective political parties just to give students the impression that the USC is an “impartial” body.

If you study political dynamics, you would understand that when council members were still candidates, they were carrying the advocacies and positions of their political parties. And you can read these positions in their GPOAs, statements, posters, etc.

Now, the assumption there is that all students know of these positions (This is a safe assumption, unless there is overwhelming evidence that students were denied knowledge of the parties’ position on issues). Given that knowledge, the students still elected these candidates to the position. It means that students believe in these candidates’ position of what students and community rights and welfare are, and what action/s and methodologies should be used to protect these rights.

To give credit to the USC, it is a council of partisans whose respective parties have clear delineations as to what should be prioritized, how they should be addressed, who will address them, when, and why. That is so unlike the partisans in the national government whose loyalty is based, more often than not, on money and power.

The solution is for students to be involved in University advocacies. Start an organization. Recruit like-minded people and start advocacies that you think the USC is not paying much attention to. Even if we stand diametrically opposed, I give credit to those students who coalesced in pushing for the tuition fee increase in 2007. It is an unpopular issue, and the USC made it clear that they oppose the measure. But these students stood in opposition against their own USC and voiced out their opinion. Now that’s student empowerment.

Better yet, vote in next year’s USC elections, and ask your friends to vote.

It is traditional for STAND UP to base its struggles on its comprehensive consultation with the students & the basic masses in general, coupled with critical social analysis. The party’s loyalties lie to the people. Mabuhay ka, Airah. :D

  13. 16 on May 15th, 2008 1:30 pm

  15. jo on May 24th, 2008 3:56 pm
